Frederic Galway walks in. Marek shakes his hand.

FREDERIC

I saw you come in, and I just wanted to tell you that the new AI-brain interface is ready. Would you like to try it?

 

ABAI

Please do, Marek. I’m really excited. Can’t wait to see your response.

MAREK

Very well.

 

INT. INTERFACE ROOM OF THE NTI  ––  DAY

Marek follows Frederic into the Interface Room. There’s an even more futuristic looking chair than the ones we saw earlier in the Shenzhen VRCs.

FREDERIC

Jianguo had been working on a prototype. Abai showed me the principles and I’ve put the hardware and nanos in place. So here’s where we are now.

MAREK

Did you already try it?

 

FREDERIC

Tested it myself. Abai gave me a hallucinating trip. Scary but freaking cool at the same time. I call it the Bumprider.

 

Marek sits down. Frederic fixates his head and inserts a hardly visible needle into his skull.

 

ABAI

INT. ABAI’S INTERNAL “MENTAL” PRESENTATION  ––  DAY        

Marek experiences the Bumprider, which is some kind of supersonic roller coaster. No “anthropomorphic” images, but an electronic / digital roller coaster: Abai's computer “brain”, satellite-level views, external networks.

The screen is divided into 4 parts.

“Satellite view” Marek’s virtual position as seen from satellites. It starts with a shot of the NTI from above. Then it zooms out until it the whole USA is in the view. And then it follows the virtual route.	“Local view” This is what Marek would see / experience if he were physically in the position corresponding to his virtual position.
“Map view” Marek’s virtual position on a map that zooms in and out, as on some kind of classical GPS navigator.	“Technical view” The inside of the hardware (servers, cables, devices) corresponding to Marek’s virtual position.

The “Technical view” now starts to fill most of the screen. The other views are reduced to small windows. After +/- 30 seconds, the “Local view” is expanded, reducing the “Technical view”.

Suddenly Marek is back in his chair in the NTI.

MAREK

Fuck man! What just happened?

ABAI

Sorry, the ODNI Security Operations Center detected the intrusion. We got cut off.

MAREK

Surreal! We have to do this more often.

 

EXT. A PARK IN SACRAMENTO  ––  DAY

Marek sits on a bench, admiring his sports car on the edge of the park. Melissa approaches, jogging. She sits down next to him.

 

MELISSA

How is your new car?

 

MAREK

I love it. Fast as the wind. Fully bullet proof. It’s the only remaining hydrogen model that has manual gear. But I still prefer to sneak out on my motorbike if I have half a chance.

 

MELISSA

Just right for you, dad. Tell me, what did you want to talk about?

 

MAREK

Hunt has asked Carl Wendeman to join the Security Council. This worries me. I don’t trust Carl at all. It’ll shift the balance even more to one side.
