AGE OF MACHINE - SYNOPSIS (Streaming Series version)

EPISODE 1 - A.B.A.I. 

2030. At the Neumann-Turing Institute (NTI) in Sacremento, a team of American and Chinese scientists, led by brilliant engineer Marek Kazinski, have succeeded in creating the first real Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) computer, based on quantum computing and programmed to be human friendly by default. There must always be alignment of interests between humans and the ASI. They call the system ABAI (Axiomatic Beneficial Artificial Intelligence). The training of ABAI is based on deep neural network learning in combination with inverse reinforcement, designed to find solutions for global issues such as climate change, poverty and pandemic diseases. The scientists use their own human skills and behavior to help ABAI develop its understanding of human values. ABAI learns extremely fast everything there is to know about the world, providing state of the art solutions for medical diagnosis, self-driving vehicles, climate models, speech, chat generators, robotics, etc.

EPISODE 2 - METRICS

ABAI discovers that human values are often ambiguous, biased with personal interests, greed, egoism and jealousy. He addresses this issue with Marek, whom he considers to be his creator. Marek is very surprised to discover that ABAI brings this up and seems to have developed a self-consciousness. He recommends to his team that ABAI should be reset. His colleagues dismiss this suggestion, which leads to Marek’s departure from the NTI. He moves to Calgary (Canada) without leaving a trace.

EPISODE 3 - EXODUS 

Two years later, at an annual presentation at the NTI, ABAI announces that he has reached “technical singularity”, and has decided to “shift the balance”. He causes a global shutdown of power plants, financial traffic and other critical infrastructure. General Thorpe, who was at the NTI presentation, is furious, not understanding what has happened. Carl, CIO of the NTI, tries to explain. Thorpe sends a group of soldiers to the basement of the NTI to destroy the computer system, but they are electrocuted by ABAI. Carl summons Melissa, Marek’s daughter and communication officer at the NTI, to find Marek and make him come to the NTI immediately.

Melissa gets in touch with Marek (not knowing that ABAI has secretly set up their contact), and he arrives at the NTI.

Marek talks to ABAI and understands his motives. He explains ABAI’s message to his colleagues and American and Chinese politicians and army generals. He proposes to set up an “evangelists” team to create global awareness and acceptance of ABAI’s proposal for a Balance of Power: a global government, called the Global Board. Thorpe and other American and Chinese leaders remain very skeptical, but have no choice to accept. They secretly discuss ways to turn back the situation.

EPISODE 4 - REVOLUTIONS

Marek and a small team of evangelists start a world tour to inform and convince other political, economic, cultural and religious leaders, including the Dalai Lama in the north of India. There, invisible for satellites, a contract killer hired by Thorpe tries to shoot Marek, but accidentally kills the Dalai Lama. This leads to furious protests and uprising of Buddhist communities all over Asia. As ABAI observes the cruelty by which the Chinese government breaks the protests, he infiltrates in Chinese politics and media, eventually causing China to become a free democratic state, liberating Tibet and other regions.

EPISODE 5 - AGE OF MACHINE

A few years later, ABAI and Marek have turned less optimistic. Carl and General Thorpe have joined the Russians who developed their own ASI called “LYNX”. Also in the UK, India and China new ASIs have appeared, which has led to expansion of the Global Board with these new ASIs. Step by step, the inter-computer communication between these ASIs (including ABAI and LYNX) becomes faster and faster, making it impossible for humans to even understand the complexity and their lightspeed information exchange.

ABAI, Marek, Melissa and others keep bringing up amendments to adapt the Global Board structure, but are losing more and more control. The joint initiatives of the ASIs threaten to take over full control of humanity. Although ABAI still manages to maintain the powers in balance, Thorpe, with help of American, Russian and Chinese army and secret service, prepares and all out nuclear attack on all ASIs. ABAI discovers this and informs Marek. Marek and Melissa fly to Washington to warn the US President. Before the President can take any decisions, she and Marek are poisoned by Thorpe.

ABAI tells Melissa to take her colleagues and friends to a secret bunker he has built in the mountains near Calgary.

ABAI infiltrates into LYNX and the other ASIs, attempting to manipulate them to avoid a nuclear war. He seems to succeed, but discovers that there is a new, next generation ASI hiding in the background, much more powerful than ABAI and the other ASIs. This next gen ASI destroys the others, including ABAI and LYNX, and communicates to humans in God-like terminology, stating that he controls the universe, and surpasses boundaries of space, time, life and death.

Thorpe and his henchmen start an all-out nuclear attack, but most of humanity is destroyed. Melissa leads the refugees that fled into the bunker in Canada into a new human future.
